Dear ACL,
This is now the umpteenth email I have received from you concerning same sex marriage.
When you begin to address issues such as our asylum seeker policy, the environment, welfare and healthcare with the same fervor and enthusiasm as you do with same sex marriage, I might start listening to you, and you might start gaining the some credibility and traction within the wider community.
I am not a single-issue Christian, my vote is cast on a range of issues, none of which you have addressed with anything like the fervor of this one. You are the living illustration of the criticism of Jesus to the Pharisees of his day: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. [24] You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.”
You have said next to nothing about asylum seekers.
You have said next to nothing about the environment.
You have said next to nothing about healthcare.
You have said next to nothing about our government’s systematic dismantling of nearly every single policy designed to protect the poor and needy.
You may think that a few paragraphs somewhere on your website absolves you from any other responsibilities in this regard. It does not. Your failure in this regard leaves open to the charge of being nothing other than a right-wing, conservative, tea party movement. The kind which now smears and disgraces the American political landscape.
No! I won’t sign your petition. And stop doing this kind of stuff, you’re embarrassing yourselves and the name of Christ.
